What To Expect: Biofeedback
is a treatment for urinary incontinence, urinary urgency, frequency,
pelvic prolapse, and some types of pelvic pain. Research has shown that
this therapy can improve or cure up to 65% of urinary incontinence.
You
will undress from the waist down, put on a gown, and lie on the exam
table. A small probe, similar to a tampon, is then inserted into the
vagina by the therapist. The probe contains sensors that pick up muscle
activity of the pelvic muscles. Two electrodes are placed on the
abdomen to pick up abdominal muscle activity. You will then be asked to
contract your pelvic floor muscles similar to stopping your urine
stream. A visual display of the intensity of the contraction will be
seen on a monitor. Your therapist will evaluate the findings and then
be able to explain how to improve your pelvic contractions.
Preprocedure: It
is first necessary to have your bladder function tested through
urodynamics to determine if biofeedback is a viable treatment option.
This testing is done in our office.
Postprocedure: An
exercise program will be developed specifically for you based on the
results of your pelvic floor measurements. You will be given a copy of
your home program to follow and a voiding diary to complete. Most
patients complete therapy in 6-8 sessions over 2-3 months. Return
sessions focus on reviewing your progress and further strengthening of
the pelvic floor with the use of biofeedback.
